San Joaquin County will be forced to cut nearly $100 million. Students and schools did not create this budget problem, and their progress should not be undermined because of it.

| MHS Receives $1200 Garden Grant |

Manteca High School has been selected to receive a $1200 School Garden Grant from the California Fertilizer Foundation. The presentation will take place on Friday, August 29 at the school farm at 2901 E. Louise Ave., Lathrop. Several dignitaries have been invited to the social event, along with state senators Dave Cogdill and Mike Machado, and Assemblyman Greg Aghazarian along with the local media. Congratulations MHS!

| Students at MUSD Pick & Sell Grapes to Gallo |

On Friday and Saturday 37 Ag students from all the highschools, along with Ryan Costa, Manteca High Instructor, were busy picking 15 tons of grapes at the school farm. The chardonnay grapes will be sold to Gallo Winery and the money will be used to benefit the MUST program. The students who worked will earn up to $100.00 for all of their time & hardwork. A Big "Thanks" goes out to a local farmer Mike Gikas who graciously donated picking bins, gondolas and forklift equipment so this could be made possible. Great Job!!!

Many of our schools will be holding their "Back to School" nights in the next few weeks. Take advantage of the opportunity to see the world your child inhabits everyday and meet the people in charge. It's one of the best ways to begin to build that connection with your child's teacher!!

| Joseph Widmer Receives Target Grant |

Joseph Widmer received a grant from Target for the Artists-in-Schools Program. The grant will provide their first grade classes with the opportunity to bring professional artists into the classroom. The program will consist of multicultural art activities which incorporate music.

The purpose of SHAPE is to improve the health and academic success of students. This is achieved by parent participation in school activities through exercise an PE.

Lathrop High School is the fifth comprehensive high school to open in Manteca Unified School District. High School Principal, David Chamberlain along with staff welcomed about 500 incoming freshman and sophmores at the first assembly at Lathrop High School on Monday. This is an exciting year for both MUSD and the City of Lathrop to have a beautiful new high school campus!

| Fundraising for School Farm Renovations |

The district is teaming up with the nonprofit Manteca Unified Student Trust in hopes of raising as much as $1.5 million to match a career technical facilities state grant of $1.5 million they hope to acquire to make needed repairs and renovations to the aging property at Airport Way and Louise Avenue near Manteca.
